I think something good is happening in interior design and furniture design - we seem to be getting more mature - recent research shows a search for a sense of lived-in interior - people increasingly prefer photos of homes that show real life, rather than photos intended for publication in interior magazines. "There is a growing awareness on social media that decorating should never be just for a photo," says Lucy Hammond Giles, director at Sibyl Colefax & Fowler. Imperfection, a little mess, and interiors that look like they were put together over many years are considered particularly attractive now. Reuse, repurpose, repurpose – this gives furniture a whole new life. 2026 will be a year dedicated to combining furniture and creating spaces that truly feel like home
And that brings us to an interesting term: “midimalism.” Minimalism says less is more, maximalism says the opposite. But midimalism? It’s the thoughtful balance between the two. It’s where individuality meets serenity: a home that feels organized, not empty; expressive, yet calm. Every piece of furniture has a purpose, and nothing is intrusive. Rather than choosing sides, midimalism embraces the best of both worlds: warmth with clarity, character with restraint. It allows spaces to feel livable, personal, and timeless. Maybe midimalism isn’t a trend, maybe it’s a natural evolution of the way we want to live now
It would be unrealistic to expect that we will change our home every year to keep up with the latest trends - like in fashion, for example. But a little inspiration is never superfluous, and more information is always useful, because it can help us, if not to change our interior in general, then at least to make it as comfortable as possible for us. It is also interesting to learn about global development directions, because these trends reflect the culture as a whole - how we live, what we value and how we want to feel when we wake up in the morning and come home in the evening.
